Approximately fifty of her hymns are extant and twenty-three are included in the Orthodox Church liturgical books. The exact number is difficult to assess, as many hymns are ascribed to different authors in different manuscripts and are often identified as anonymous. In addition, some 789 of her non-liturgical verses survive. Many are epigrams or aphorisms called \"gnomic verse\". George the Sinner) and Leo the Grammarian, claim that she was a participant in the \"bride show\" [3] organized for the young bachelor Theophilos the Iconoclast by his stepmother, the Empress Dowager Euphrosyne. Smitten by Kassia's beauty, the young emperor approached her and said: \"Through a woman [came forth] the baser [things]\", referring to the sin and suffering coming as a result of Eve's transgression. Kassia promptly responded by saying: \"And through a woman [came forth] the better [things]\", referring to the hope of salvation resulting from the Incarnation of Christ through the Theotokos. Eventually, God allowed his fame to spread once again, and he was asked by a nearby community of monks to become their abbot. The saint reluctantly agreed. However, the men rebelled against his ascetic directions and attempted to poison him. St. Benedict was unharmed, because as he made the sign of the cross over the poisoned drink, the cup shattered. He returned to his cave. Gradually individuals began to come to live near him at Subiaco, and in the end St. Benedict built twelve monasteries for these spiritual children, living himself at a thirteenth, Monte Cassino. To the words of the Lord the other Apostles answered: But the Jews want to kill you there, why should we return? Only the Apostle Thomas answered: Let us follow Him and let us die with Him. He was prepared not only to be His disciple in words, not only to follow Him as a disciple follows his teacher, but to die with Him, as a man who decides to die with his friend and if necessary for the sake of his friend. So let us remember the greatness of his soul, the faith and the integrity of his character. But what happened when after the Resurrection of Christ the Apostles announced to the one who alone had not seen the Lord, that they really saw the resurrected Christ? Why did he not believe their words? Why did he doubt? Why did he say he needed proof, tangible proof? Because when he saw them he saw them happy with what they saw, they were happy that Christ was no longer dead, that he was alive, happy for the victory he had won. Converted to Christianity through a vision, she denounced Maxentius for persecuting Christians. Fifty of her converts were then burned to death by Maxentius. Maxentius offered Catherine a royal marriage if she would deny the Faith. Her refusal landed her in prison. While in prison, and while Maxentius was away, Catherine converted Maxentius' wife and two hundred of his soldiers. He had them all put to death.St. Catherine was likewise condemned to death. She was put on a spiked wheel, and when the wheel broke, she was beheaded. For this reason these saint icons picture her with a spiked wheel. She is venerated as the patroness of philosophers and preachers. St. Catherine's was one of the voices heard by St. Joan of Arc.Maxentius' blind fury against St. Catherine is symbolic of the anger of the world in the face of truth and justice. And God did provide him with it through holy experiences at night, but also through pilgrims. One of them was the then Metropolitan of Chalcedon and now Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. On February 10, 1989, he visited the monastery and served Divine Liturgy. The elder was particularly pleased and “prophesied” to him in certainty (when Patriarch Demetrios was still in good health): “You will become Patriarch! You will shepherd Christ’s Church. I pray that you visit St. David’s monastery as Patriarch.” The elder offered him an icon and gave him also a sprig of basil for Patriarch Demetrios with the request to “pray for our monastery.” Two years later, humble Demetrios slept, and the issue of a new Patriarch arose. In October 1991, the elder was informed by a visiting priest that the Turkish government was considering removing the names of the synodical metropolitans from the candidates list. The elder went down into the temple, prayed to St. David, and came back to the priest: “I prayed, Father, to St. David. ‘St. David’, I told him, ‘you have surely granted all my requests so far.
