From 1918 until his death he bore the stigmata, the visible wounds of Christ's Passion, in his hands, feet and side, and became one of the most widely venerated holy men of the twentieth century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe spent countless hours in the confessional, hearing the sins of the faithful who travelled from across the world to San Giovanni Rotondo to seek his counsel; he was renowned for his gifts of discernment and healing, and for the tears he shed in prayer for others. He also founded a great hospital, the \"Home for the Relief of Suffering,\" out of his love for the sick and the poor.
