The Significance of Saint Arsenios the Cappadocian
Saint Arsenios the Cappadocian (1840-1924) was a holy priest and wonderworker of Farasa in Cappadocia, who served his flock for over half a century with prayer, fasting and boundless love. Gifted with discernment and the grace of healing, he helped Christians and Muslims alike, reading the Psalter over the sick and the troubled, and was revered far beyond his own village.
During the great exchange of populations he led his people to safety in Greece, foretelling his own repose forty days after their arrival; he reposed on the island of Corfu in 1924. It was Saint Arsenios who baptised the child who would become Saint Paisios of Mount Athos, giving him his own name. Glorified as a saint in 1986, he is celebrated on 10 November. In this icon he stands before Christ enthroned, interceding for the faithful — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
