The Significance of the Panagia Gorgoypikoos

The Panagia Gorgoypikoos — "She who is Quick to Hear" — is a celebrated wonderworking icon treasured at the Holy Monastery of Docheiariou on Mount Athos. Its name comes from a promise of the Mother of God herself. According to tradition a careless monk repeatedly passed before the icon with a smoking torch, dishonouring it, until the Virgin's voice rebuked him and he was struck blind. After he wept and prayed before the icon in deep repentance, his sight was restored, and the Theotokos declared that she would henceforth be "quick to hear" the prayers of all who call upon her with faith.

Since then countless faithful have hastened to her in their need, confident of her swift intercession. As a devotional icon, the Panagia Gorgoypikoos is a sign of the Mother of God's ready compassion and help — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift of comfort and hope.
