The Significance of Saint Demetrios
Saint Demetrios of Thessaloniki, the Great Martyr (Megalomartyr), was a young Roman officer in the early 4th century who openly taught and confessed the Christian faith. During the persecutions of the Emperor Galerius he was imprisoned and, around the year 306, was speared to death for his witness to Christ. From his relics there flowed fragrant myrrh, and so he is honoured as the "Myrrh-streamer" (Myrovlitis).
The protector and patron of the city of Thessaloniki, he is among the most beloved warrior-saints of the Orthodox world, often depicted as a soldier — frequently mounted on a red horse, the companion image to Saint George. He is celebrated on 26 October. As a devotional icon, Saint Demetrios is a sign of courage, protection and faithful witness — a powerful presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift, especially for those who bear his name.
