The Significance of Saint Helen

Saint Helen, mother of the Emperor Saint Constantine the Great, is honoured as Equal-to-the-Apostles for her great service to the Church. Already advanced in years, she journeyed to the Holy Land where, after long searching, she discovered the True Cross upon which Christ was crucified, together with the holy places of His Passion and Resurrection.

She built magnificent churches over the sites of the Nativity in Bethlehem and the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and devoted her life to works of faith and mercy. Together with her son she is celebrated on 21 May. As a devotional icon, Saint Helen is a sign of faith, piety and devotion to the Cross of Christ — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear her name.
