The Significance of Saint Luke the Surgeon
Saint Luke of Crimea (1877-1961), born Valentin Voino-Yasenetsky, was one of the most remarkable saints of the modern era — at once a brilliant surgeon and a faithful bishop of the Church. He pioneered life-saving techniques in surgery and wrote medical works still respected today, while serving as Archbishop of Simferopol and Crimea.
For his open confession of Christ he endured years of imprisonment and exile under the Soviet regime, yet never abandoned either his priesthood or his patients, often operating and preaching on the same day. Canonised in 2000, he is venerated throughout the Orthodox world — and especially in Greece — as a wonderworker and the patron of physicians, surgeons and all who are ill. He is celebrated on 11 June. As a devotional icon, Saint Luke is a source of comfort and hope for the sick and a meaningful gift for doctors, nurses and those who bear his name.
