The Significance of Saint Martin de Porres

This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography and has a double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing.

Saint Martin de Porres (1579-1639) was born in Lima, Peru, the son of a Spanish nobleman and a freed African woman. Because of his birth he was scorned in the society of his day, and for years he was permitted to serve the Dominicans only as a lay helper, sweeping and tending the sick — work he embraced with such joy that he became known as "the saint of the broom."

Eventually received as a lay brother, he cared for the poor, the abandoned and the sick of every race and class, founded an orphanage, and was said to be granted extraordinary gifts of healing. He is remembered too for his tenderness towards animals. Canonised in 1962, he is honoured as a patron of social and racial justice, of barbers, and of all who work with the sick; he is celebrated on 3 November.
