The Significance of Saint Matthew
Saint Matthew, one of the Twelve Apostles and one of the four Evangelists, was a tax collector named Levi at Capernaum when the Lord, passing by, said simply, "Follow Me" — and at once he rose, left everything, and followed Christ. From a despised publican he became an apostle and witness of the Gospel.
He is the author of the first of the four Gospels, written for the Hebrew people, in which he shows that Jesus is the promised Messiah foretold by the prophets. After Pentecost he preached the Gospel in distant lands and received the crown of martyrdom. In iconography he is shown as an Evangelist writing his Gospel, with his symbol the winged man. He is celebrated on 16 November. As a devotional icon, Saint Matthew is a sign of conversion and the call of Christ — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
