The Significance of Saint Padre Pio

This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography and has a double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing.

Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina (1887-1968) was born Francesco Forgione in the village of Pietrelcina in southern Italy, and entered the Capuchin friars as a young man. From 1918 until his death he bore the stigmata, the visible wounds of Christ's Passion, in his hands, feet and side, and became one of the most widely venerated holy men of the twentieth century.

He spent countless hours in the confessional, hearing the sins of the faithful who travelled from across the world to San Giovanni Rotondo to seek his counsel; he was renowned for his gifts of discernment and healing, and for the tears he shed in prayer for others. He also founded a great hospital, the "Home for the Relief of Suffering," out of his love for the sick and the poor. Canonised in 2002, he is celebrated on 23 September.
