The Significance of Saint Paul
Saint Paul, honoured together with Saint Peter as a chief of the Apostles, is called the "Apostle to the Nations" for carrying the Gospel across the world. Once Saul of Tarsus, a zealous Pharisee who persecuted the Church, he was transformed by a vision of the Risen Christ on the road to Damascus, who said to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?"
From that moment he became the most tireless of missionaries, founding churches throughout Asia Minor and Greece — preaching at the Areopagus in Athens and in Corinth, Thessaloniki, Philippi and Veroia — and writing fourteen Epistles that form a great part of the New Testament. He was martyred in Rome around the year 67. He is celebrated, together with Saint Peter, on 29 June. As a devotional icon, Saint Paul is a sign of conversion, zeal and faith — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
