The Significance of Saint Peter
Saint Peter, originally Simon the fisherman, was one of the Twelve Apostles and is honoured, together with Saint Paul, as a chief of the Apostles (Protokoryphaios). When he confessed Jesus as "the Christ, the Son of the living God," the Lord called him Peter — the "rock" — saying, "Upon this rock I will build My Church," and gave into his keeping the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Though he denied the Lord three times during the Passion, he wept bitterly, repented, and was restored by the Risen Christ. After Pentecost he preached the Gospel with great power and at last was martyred in Rome, crucified head-downward out of humility, around the year 67. He is celebrated, together with Saint Paul, on 29 June. As a devotional icon, Saint Peter is a sign of faith, repentance and steadfastness — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
