The Significance of Saint Seraphim of Sarov
Saint Seraphim of Sarov (1754-1833), born Prokhor Moshnin, is one of the most beloved saints of the Orthodox Church. A monk of the Sarov Monastery, he withdrew into the forest to live as a hermit in prayer and extreme asceticism — famously praying for a thousand days and nights upon a rock, and living in such peace with creation that even a wild bear came gently to his hand.
After years of silence and solitude he opened his door to thousands of pilgrims, greeting each one with the words "My joy, Christ is risen!" His teaching that the aim of the Christian life is the acquisition of the Holy Spirit, and his radiant conversation with Nicholas Motovilov, remain among the treasures of Orthodox spirituality. Canonised in 1903, he is celebrated on 2 January and 19 July. As a devotional icon, Saint Seraphim is a model of prayer, joy and inner peace — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
