The Significance of Saint Spyridon
Saint Spyridon (c. 270-348), Bishop of Trimythous in Cyprus, was a simple shepherd raised to the episcopate for his holiness, humility and love. At the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 he confounded the Arians by taking a clay tile and, with a prayer, causing fire to flash up, water to flow down, and clay to remain in his hand — a living image of the one God in three Persons.
A great wonderworker in life and after his repose, his incorrupt relics rest on the island of Corfu, of which he is the beloved patron and protector; the faithful say he still walks the world helping those in need, and he is recognised in icons by his woven shepherd's hat. He is celebrated on 12 December. As a devotional icon, Saint Spyridon is a sign of humble faith and miraculous help — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
