The Significance of Saints Constantine and Helen
Saints Constantine and Helen, mother and son, are together honoured as Equal-to-the-Apostles for the freedom and triumph they brought to the Christian faith. Before the decisive battle at the Milvian Bridge, the Emperor Constantine beheld in the sky the sign of the Cross with the words "In this sign conquer" (En toutō nika); victorious, he issued the Edict of Milan in 313, granting the Church peace after centuries of persecution.
He founded the city of Constantinople and convened the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea in 325, while his mother Helen journeyed to Jerusalem and discovered the True Cross. In their joint icon they stand on either side of that Cross, which they so loved and honoured. They are celebrated together on 21 May. As a devotional icon, Saints Constantine and Helen are a sign of faith, victory and devotion to the Cross — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear their names.
