The Significance of the Crucifixion
The Crucifixion is the central event of the Christian faith — the moment in which Christ, out of love, offered Himself upon the Cross for the salvation of the world. In the Orthodox icon the Lord is shown with His head gently inclined, no longer in agony but in the peace of His willing sacrifice, while the inscription proclaims Him "The King of Glory."
At the foot of the Cross stand His Mother, the Theotokos, and the beloved disciple John the Theologian, to whom the Lord entrusted her; the skull of Adam is often shown beneath, for tradition holds that Christ was crucified above the place of Adam's burial, His blood redeeming the first man. It is the very heart of the services of Holy Friday. As a devotional icon, the Crucifixion is a profound reminder of Christ's saving love — a sacred presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for a Christian home.
