Este ícono bizantino es una litografía con doble capa de barniz para garantizar colores vivos y propiedades impermeables que representa a Jesucristo bendiciendo al mundo en el Sinaí. Es una obra de arte inspirada en Dios que se rige por la técnica atoniana que le da a este ícono un valor religioso y estético único.
El Cristo Pantocrátor del Monasterio de Santa Catalina en el Sinaí es uno de los iconos religiosos romanos orientales más antiguos, que data del siglo VI d. C.[1] Es la versión más antigua conocida del estilo Pantocrátor que aún se conserva, y es considerada por historiadores y eruditos como una de las obras más importantes y reconocibles en el estudio del arte bizantino, así como del cristianismo ortodoxo oriental.[2]
Durante un tiempo se creyó que el icono databa del siglo XIII, ya que había sido pintado casi por completo en ese momento, pero en 1962 se concluyó que, de hecho, es de mediados del siglo VI, aunque aún se desconoce la fecha exacta de producción.[3] Cuando el Monasterio de Santa Catalina fue fundado por el emperador bizantino Justiniano I, a finales de su reinado, entre 548 y 565,[4] disfrutó del patrocinio imperial y de donaciones de Justiniano y su corte, siendo el icono de Cristo Pantocrátor uno de los muchos posibles regalos imperiales.[5] Debido a esto, generalmente se cree que se produjo en la capital bizantina de Constantinopla.[6]
Muchos coinciden en que el icono representa la naturaleza dual de Cristo, ilustrando rasgos tanto del hombre como de Dios,[7] quizás influenciado por las consecuencias de los concilios ecuménicos del siglo anterior en Éfeso y Calcedonia.[8] Se supone que los rasgos de Cristo en su lado izquierdo (el derecho del espectador) representan las cualidades de su naturaleza humana, mientras que su lado derecho (el izquierdo del espectador) representa su divinidad.[9] Su mano derecha se muestra abierta hacia afuera, lo que significa su don de bendición, mientras que la mano y el brazo izquierdos sostienen un grueso libro del Evangelio.[10]
