The Significance of the Righteous Phinehas
This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography and has a double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing.
The Righteous Phinehas was the son of Eleazar and the grandson of Aaron the High Priest, and he served as high priest of Israel in the days of the wandering in the wilderness and of the entry into the Promised Land. In the icon he is shown vested in the garments of the Old Testament priesthood, holding the censer of his sacred office.
Scripture remembers him above all for his burning zeal for the worship of the one true God at a moment when the people had turned aside to idolatry, and for the covenant of peace and of an everlasting priesthood which God granted to him and to his descendants in return for that zeal. He later served as a peacemaker among the tribes, turning aside conflict through wise mediation, and he is counted among the Righteous Ancestors of the Lord commemorated by the Orthodox Church.
