The Significance of Saint Athanasius the Great
Saint Athanasius the Great (c. 296-373), Patriarch of Alexandria, is honoured as one of the greatest Fathers of the Orthodox Church and a pillar of the faith. As a young deacon he took part in the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (325), and throughout his life he was the foremost defender of the true teaching that Christ is fully God, of one essence with the Father, against the heresy of Arius.
For this unwavering confession he was sent into exile five times, yet never abandoned the truth — giving rise to the saying "Athanasius against the world." His writings, above all "On the Incarnation" and the "Life of Saint Anthony," remain treasures of Christian theology. He is celebrated on 18 January, together with Saint Cyril of Alexandria. As a devotional icon, Saint Athanasius is a sign of steadfast faith and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
