The Significance of Saint Bernard

This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography and has a double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing.

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) was born of a noble family in Burgundy and entered the young reforming monastery of Cîteaux as a youth, bringing with him a number of his own brothers and kinsmen. Sent out to found a new house at Clairvaux, he became its abbot while still in his twenties, and under his guidance the Cistercian life spread across Europe.

He was renowned above all for the warmth and sweetness of his preaching, which earned him the title "Doctor Mellifluus" — the honey-sweet teacher — and for his tender devotion to the Mother of God, of whom he wrote with unmatched affection. His commentaries on the Song of Songs remain classics of monastic spirituality. Declared a Doctor of the Church, he is celebrated on 20 August.

As a devotional icon, Saint Bernard is a sign of monastic discipline, eloquence in the service of God and love for the Theotokos — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift.
