The Significance of Saint John the Baptist

Saint John the Baptist, called in the Orthodox Church the Forerunner (Prodromos), is honoured as the greatest of the prophets and the one who prepared the way for Christ. The son of the priest Zechariah and the righteous Elizabeth, he lived as an ascetic in the wilderness, clothed in camel-hair, calling the people to repentance with the cry, "Prepare the way of the Lord."

He baptised the Lord in the waters of the Jordan, where the Holy Spirit descended as a dove and the voice of the Father was heard — the revelation of the Holy Trinity. For rebuking the sin of Herod he was imprisoned and beheaded. Christ Himself said of him that "among those born of women there has risen no one greater." In iconography he is often shown winged, as the angel-messenger of the desert, holding a scroll. As a devotional icon, Saint John the Baptist is a sign of repentance and faithful witness — a powerful presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
