The Significance of Saint John the Theologian
Saint John, called the Theologian, was one of the Twelve Apostles and the beloved disciple "whom Jesus loved." The son of Zebedee and brother of James, he alone among the apostles stood with the Theotokos at the foot of the Cross, where the Lord entrusted His Mother to his care.
He is the author of the Fourth Gospel — which begins with the sublime words "In the beginning was the Word" — of three Epistles, and of the Book of Revelation, which he received while exiled on the island of Patmos. For the depth of his vision of the Word of God he is honoured with the rare title "the Theologian." Alone of the apostles he reposed in peace at a great age. He is celebrated on 8 May and 26 September. As a devotional icon, Saint John the Theologian is a sign of divine love and contemplation — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
