The Significance of the Crucifixion

This is the great narrative icon of the Crucifixion, showing not only the Lord upon the Cross but the whole company gathered on Golgotha. To one side the Theotokos, overcome with grief, is supported by the holy women; near her stands the beloved disciple John. To the other side are the soldiers who cast lots for Christ's garments and the centurion who, beholding His death, confessed, "Truly this was the Son of God."

Beneath the Cross the rock of Golgotha is shown opened, revealing the skull of Adam, for tradition holds that Christ was crucified above the place of the first man's burial, His blood flowing down to redeem the whole human race. The inscription proclaims Him "The King of Glory." It is the very heart of the services of Holy Friday.
