The Significance of the Last Supper
The Last Supper, known in the Orthodox Church as the Mystical Supper, is the meal Christ shared with His twelve disciples on the night before His Crucifixion. At this table the Lord took bread and wine and gave them as His own Body and Blood, instituting the Holy Eucharist — the central mystery of Christian worship — and commanding, "Do this in remembrance of Me." It was also here that He foretold His betrayal.
In Byzantine iconography the apostles are gathered around the table with Christ, the beloved disciple John resting near Him. The image is traditionally placed above the Royal Doors of the iconostasis, at the very heart of the church, and it is commemorated on Holy Thursday. As a devotional icon, the Last Supper is a profound reminder of Christ's self-giving love and of the Holy Eucharist — a meaningful presence in any prayer corner and a fitting gift for a Christian home.
