Virgin Mary "The Elderess" of Mount Athos Orthodox Icon in 925 Sterling Silver, Gold-Plated Byzantine, Handmade in Greece

Virgin Mary Gerontissa (= The Elderess) of Mount Athos. Icon of a unique style, the original of which is located in the Holy Monastery of Pantokratoros. It is crafted with 925 sterling silver and local 24-karat gold plating. The halo and the main elements of the icon are locally painted over the silver with enamel colors in a blue shade. The Virgin Mary's garment is adorned with Swarovski stones in burgundy and blue shades. The subject of the icon is mounted on MDF wood in a cherry shade, veneered and featuring a surrounding fillet (patoura) 2.3 cm wide. The metal of the icon has undergone a special treatment to remain non-tarnishing.

It can be hung on the wall or placed on a table with a stand.

    15.5 × 35.5 cm, with a wood thickness of 1.7 cm

Historical Information

The miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary Gerontissa (= The Elderess) is located in the Holy Monastery of Pantokratoros on Mount Athos and is the patron icon of the Monastery. It is a copy of the mosaic icon of the Virgin Mary Gorgoepikoos (= Quick to respond to the prayers who seek her aid) which was located in the Pantokratoros Monastery in Constantinople. Her form is most sweet, pleasant, and full of mercy to behold, leaving every pilgrim with feelings of joy, gladness, exultation, hope, comfort, and compassion, showing that she rushes to the needs of Her children and always comforts Her faithful.
