**The Candle**

The word "candle" comes from the Latin "candela." In the Christian Church, candles are placed in front of sacred icons, and one is always kept alight before the Crucified in the sanctuary, called the "vigilant" candle. At home, candles are lit daily, symbolizing Christ’s light, which enlightens, warms, consoles, and offers companionship in loneliness. Lighting a candle is an offering of respect and honor to God and His Saints, symbolizing Christ’s light and Christians' role as the "light of the world."

The oil used in candles symbolizes God's mercy, reflected in the stories of Noah’s dove and Jesus’ prayers at the Mount of Olives. Saint Simeon of Thessaloniki highlights the deeper spiritual meaning of this light over material light. Candles also represent the Church and the Saints, who shine with the Lord’s light.

Orthodox Christians light candles for many reasons: to inspire prayer, drive away darkness, remind us that Christ is the true light, and symbolize that our lives must also shine. The olive oil used represents God’s mercy and grace. The light in the temple reflects God's presence, illuminating the hearts of all Christians. 

Jesus proclaimed, "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12), signifying His teachings and divine presence. In the Creed, the Son of God is called "Light of Light," and Christians, through the sacraments and spiritual efforts, can receive and radiate the Holy Spirit’s light. Christ told His disciples, "You are the light of the world," encouraging them to let their good deeds shine before others to honor God. In the next life, the Saints will reflect God's grace and become “Gods by grace.”
