The Significance of Synaxis of the Apostles

The Synaxis of the Twelve Apostles is celebrated on June 30, following the feast of Saints Peter and Paul (June 29). In Orthodox tradition, a Synaxis (a liturgical gathering) honors saints who played a significant role in preceding major feast days. An example is the Synaxis of St. John the Baptist, observed after Theophany.

The Twelve Apostles were chosen by Christ to fulfill the Great Commission: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). While each Apostle is commemorated individually throughout the liturgical year, the Church also established a collective feast to honor their shared mission in spreading the Gospel.

The names of the Twelve Apostles are: Simon Peter and his brother Andrew the First-Called; James and John, sons of Zebedee; Philip; Bartholomew; Thomas; Matthew the Evangelist; James, son of Alphaeus; Jude Thaddeus; Simon the Zealot; and Matthias, who succeeded Judas Iscariot.

Holyarts is the only place I come for icons

Handmade in Greece since 1978.

Every piece leaves our workshop finished by hand — the wood prepared, the image laid, the surface aged and varnished. One at a time, the way Greek icon workshops have worked for generations.

We make them to be lived with: held in prayer, hung in a quiet corner, passed on.

"Come close to God, and God will come close to you." — James 4:8
