The Significance of The Maundy Foot Washing of Jesus Christ to the Apostles

This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography and has a double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing.

Maundy (from Old French mandé, from Latin mandatum meaning "command"),[1] or Washing of the Saints' Feet, Washing of the Feet, or Pedelavium,[2] is a religious rite observed by various Christian denominations. The Latin word mandatum is the first word sung at the ceremony of the washing of the feet, "Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos", from the text of John 13:34 in the Vulgate ("I give you a new commandment, That ye love one another as I have loved you", John 13:34). This is also seen as referring to the commandment of Christ that believers should emulate his loving humility in the washing of the feet (John 13:14–17). The term mandatum (mandé, maundy), therefore, was applied to the rite of foot-washing on the Thursday preceding Easter Sunday, called Maundy Thursday.

Handmade in Greece since 1978.

Every piece leaves our workshop finished by hand — the wood prepared, the image laid, the surface aged and varnished. One at a time, the way Greek icon workshops have worked for generations.

We make them to be lived with: held in prayer, hung in a quiet corner, passed on.

"Come close to God, and God will come close to you." — James 4:8
