The Significance of Virgin Mary Panagia

A wonderful lithography that portrays the Virgin Mary of Roses or “Rose Amaranth”. In this artwork Virgin Mary is depicted holding a rose in her right hand. The history of the original image begins in Piraeus around 1890 AD, when a fisherman of the area recovered an old image amongst the beach rocks, but differed from what he had seen until then, as Virgin Mary held a rose in her hand. In fact, even Jesus did not appear as an infant, but as a child.

The event became known and then Katsarou family housed the icon in a private chapel, while this small church was dedicated to Virgin Mary / Panagia “Rose Amaranth”. Many years later a church was raised to honor her name.

“Rose amaranth”, or the Rose of Jericho, or the Rose of the Virgin Mary, or the Immortal Rose of resurrection, is a plant that symbolizes the eternity and the indestructible, immortality of the soul.
