The Significance of the Archangel Michael

The Archangel Michael, whose name means "Who is like God?", is honoured in the Orthodox Church as the Archistrategos — the Chief Commander of the bodiless powers and leader of the heavenly armies. Scripture and tradition present him as the great defender of God's people: it is Michael who casts down the dragon in the Book of Revelation (12:7-9) and who stands as protector and guardian of the faithful.

He is depicted as a winged warrior, often bearing a sword or spear and triumphing over the powers of evil. The Synaxis of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel and all the Bodiless Powers is celebrated on 8 November.
