The Significance of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel

The Archangels Michael and Gabriel are the two chief messengers and ministers of God, honoured together in the Synaxis of the Holy Archangels and all the Bodiless Powers. Michael, whose name means "Who is like God?", is the Archistrategos — commander of the heavenly hosts and defender of the faithful against evil. Gabriel, whose name means "God is my strength," is the herald of God's saving mysteries, who announced to the Virgin Mary the good news of the Incarnation of Christ.

Standing side by side, they represent the whole angelic world that ceaselessly serves and glorifies God and watches over mankind; each holds a staff of office and a sphere bearing the monogram of Christ, whom they serve. The Synaxis of the Archangels is celebrated on 8 November.
