The Significance of Blessed Solanus Casey

This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography and has a double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing.

Blessed Solanus Casey (1870-1957) was born Bernard Francis Casey in Wisconsin, one of sixteen children of Irish immigrant parents. He worked as a lumberjack, prison guard and streetcar operator before entering the Capuchin friars. Because his studies had been in German and his academic progress was judged weak, he was ordained a "simplex priest" — permitted to celebrate the liturgy but not to preach formally or hear confessions.

He was assigned instead to the humblest of duties: answering the door. For decades he served as porter, first in New York and then in Detroit, and it was there that thousands came to him — the sick, the desperate, the grieving. He listened to each with unhurried attention, prayed with them, urged them to thank God in advance for His mercy, and countless healings and consolations were attributed to those prayers. He also helped found a soup kitchen that fed the hungry through the Great Depression. He was beatified in 2017 and is commemorated on 30 July.

As a devotional icon, Blessed Solanus Casey is a sign of humility, gratitude and holiness hidden in ordinary work — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift.
