The Significance of Christ of Sinai
The icon known as "Christ of Sinai" is the oldest surviving icon of Christ Pantocrator, preserved at the Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai and dating to around the 6th century. Painted in encaustic, it shows the Lord as Ruler of All (Pantocrator), blessing with His right hand and holding the jewelled Gospel in His left.
Its most celebrated feature is the gentle asymmetry of the face: the two sides differ subtly from one another, which the faithful have long understood as an image of the two natures of Christ — true God and true man — united in one person. As a devotional icon, Christ of Sinai is a profound expression of the presence of the Lord, a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for every Christian home.
