The Significance of the Extreme Humility
The icon of the Extreme Humility (in Greek, Akra Tapeinosis) shows Christ after His death upon the Cross, depicted half-length and upright within the tomb, His head bowed and His hands at rest, the Cross rising behind Him. Though it portrays the lifeless body of the Lord, it bears the inscription "The King of Glory" — for in this very moment of utter humiliation and self-emptying (kenosis) is revealed the depth of God's love and the certainty of the coming Resurrection.
One of the most moving images of Holy Week, it is closely associated with the services of the Passion and with the Epitaphios. As a devotional icon, the Extreme Humility draws the heart into the mystery of Christ's sacrifice and His victory over death — a profound presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for a Christian home.
