The Significance of the Crucifixion

After Jesus was condemned, His Passion began. The soldiers dressed Him in a scarlet robe, placed a crown of thorns upon His head and put a reed in His hand. Mocking Him, they struck Him and cried out: “Hail, King of the Jews.” Christ endured in silence until the hour they led Him away to be put to death. He carried His cross to the hill of Golgotha, where the Crucifixion took place. When they arrived, the soldiers stripped Him of His garments and crucified Him between two thieves. They then divided His clothes among themselves and went on deriding Him, saying: “If you are the Son of God, why do you not come down from the cross?” Yet once more Jesus revealed His love for mankind, forgiving those who crucified Him with the words: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
