Our Lord is the Bridegroom of the Church and of every human soul. By taking the human form he came to this world from its immense love to people, to save us from death and sin. Jesus was humiliated and led to the martyrdom of the Crucifixion to uplift the human. Christ Himself likened His coming with marriage, and Himself with a Bridegroom. The significance of this likeness is that of a «sacred marriage» of God and humanity takes place in the face of Christ. On the head he has the crown of thorns worn by the soldiers who wanted to humiliate him. The parable of Jesus is caused by the physical but also the mental pain that he is experiencing. He carries the sin of the world on his shoulders and ultimately sacrificed himself on the cross for salvation the of whole mankind.

In this artwork the technique of lithography is used, creating a unique work of beauty. Based on Authentic Byzantine art, the hagiographer painted this work abiding to the traditional method of artificial ageing, as taught in the iconography workshops of the Athonian State. In fact, the artificial ageing of the iconography is handmade, a process given particular attention by the monks of Mount Athos.
