The Significance of the Good Shepherd

The Good Shepherd is among the oldest and most beloved images of Christ in Christian art, drawn from the parable in the Gospel of Luke (15:3-7) and the words of Christ in John 10: "I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." He is shown carrying the lost sheep upon His shoulders — a sign of God's seeking love, His mercy, and His protective care for every soul.

This image appears in the earliest Christian catacombs, making it one of the first ways the faithful ever depicted the Lord. As a devotional icon it speaks of guidance, reassurance and the tender care of Christ for His flock — a fitting presence in any prayer corner, and a meaningful gift of blessing for baptisms, namedays, or a new home.
