The Significance of the Orthodox Altar Cross

The standing cross has held a central place in Orthodox worship for centuries. Placed on the altar or in the icon corner of the home, it marks the space as consecrated and draws the eye — and the prayer — upward. Unlike a wall cross, a standing cross is meant to be approached: censed, venerated, carried in procession.

The miniature icons set into the arms follow the traditional Byzantine arrangement, with Christ at the centre and the saints surrounding him. The enamel ground, in the deep reds and blues of Byzantine manuscript illumination, was chosen to make the gold detailing read clearly even in candlelight — the light by which these crosses were meant to be seen.
