The Significance of the Panagia of the Seven Swords
The icon of the Panagia of the Seven Swords — known also as "the Softening of Evil Hearts" — shows the Mother of God without the Christ-child, her breast pierced by seven swords. It recalls the prophecy of the righteous Symeon, who said to the Virgin at the Presentation of the Lord, "a sword shall pierce through your own soul also," foretelling the sorrows she would bear at the suffering of her Son.
The seven swords signify the fullness of her grief and compassion. The faithful venerate this icon as a consolation in sorrow and pray before it for the softening of hardened and embittered hearts, for peace within families and reconciliation among those at enmity. As a devotional icon, the Panagia of the Seven Swords is a sign of the Mother of God's compassion and intercession — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift of comfort.
