The Significance of the Prophet Elijah

The Holy Prophet Elijah the Tishbite was one of the greatest prophets of the Old Testament, who lived in the ninth century before Christ. Burning with zeal for the worship of the one true God, he stood alone against the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, where fire fell from heaven at his prayer. Fleeing into the wilderness, he was sustained by ravens that brought him bread and meat at the brook Cherith, and was strengthened by an angel — the scene most often shown in his icon.

For his faithfulness he was at last taken up alive into heaven in a whirlwind, in a chariot of fire, letting his mantle fall to his disciple Elisha; and tradition holds that he will come again as a forerunner of the Second Coming of Christ. Beloved in Greece, where countless mountain-top chapels bear his name, he is celebrated on 20 July. As a devotional icon, the Prophet Elijah is a sign of zeal, prayer and the power of God — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
