The Significance of Saint Alina

This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography and has a double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing.

Saint Alina — also known as Alena — was a young noblewoman of the region of Brabant, in what is today Belgium, who lived in the seventh century, when much of the land was still pagan. Though her family adhered to the old religion, she came to know the Christian faith and was secretly baptised, slipping away from her father's house before dawn to attend the divine services.

When her devotion was discovered, her family sought to force her back to the worship of idols, and she was seized on her way to church and lost her life for refusing to renounce Christ. She is venerated as a virgin martyr, and her memory has been kept in the churches of Brabant ever since; she is commemorated on 17 June.
