The Significance of Saint Andrew the First-Called
Saint Andrew, called the First-Called (Protoklitos), was the first of the Apostles to be called by Christ and the brother of Saint Peter. A fisherman of Galilee and formerly a disciple of Saint John the Baptist, he left all to follow the Lord and at once brought his brother Peter to Him.
After Pentecost he preached the Gospel through Asia Minor, the lands around the Black Sea and Greece, and is honoured as the founder of the Church of Byzantium. He was martyred at Patras in Greece, crucified upon an X-shaped cross — the "saltire" that bears his name — which he embraced with joy. Patron of Greece, he is celebrated on 30 November. As a devotional icon, Saint Andrew the First-Called is a sign of discipleship and faithful witness — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
