The Significance of Saint Aphrodite

This wonderful lithographed icon has been crafted on solid natural wood and treated twice with double varnish to ensure vivid colors and long lasting in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught the technique of hagiography and the process of handmade artificial ageing, which bears the image with the representation of Saint Aphrodite.

The Holy Saint Aphrodite the Parthenomartys (Virgin Martyr) of Holy Orthodox Church, who lived during the first Christian centuries, the era of persecution. She came from Edirne, Thrace and was at a young age when she, 39 other young women and their teacher Ammoun the Deacon were arrested by the ruler Vavdos and taken to the king of Thrace Licinius with the order to sacrifice to the idols.

The Saint, together with the confessors and their teacher, refused and so the king reserved martyrdom for all. Saint Aphrodite surrendered her soul to the Lord in the year 305 AD. Her memory is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on September 1. According to the synaxari of the day, as it is written in the Month of September:"On this day, Remembrance of the Holy Forty Women, Martyrs, Virgins and Ascetics, and Ammun Deacon, and their teacher" .
