The Significance of Saint Augustine

This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography and has a double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing.

Our father among the saints Augustine of Hippo (354–430) was Bishop of Hippo Regius in Roman North Africa and one of the most influential Fathers of the Church. His feast day is celebrated on June 15 in the Orthodox Church and on August 28 in the West.

Born in Thagaste to a pagan father and to Saint Monica, his devout Christian mother, Augustine spent his youth in worldly pursuits and the study of rhetoric, far from the faith. After years of restless searching, he was converted in Milan through the preaching of Saint Ambrose, who baptized him at Easter of 387, in answer to his mother's lifelong prayers and tears.

Returning to North Africa, he was ordained priest and consecrated Bishop of Hippo around 395, serving his flock for some thirty-five years. He preached tirelessly, cared for the poor, and defended the faith against the heresies of his time. His two great works, the Confessions and the City of God, have shaped Christian thought for over sixteen centuries. To him is attributed the prayer, "You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in You."

Augustine reposed in the Lord in 430, as the Vandals besieged Hippo, leaving behind an enduring witness to the mercy of God who seeks even those who wander far from Him.
