The Significance of Saint Basil the Great

Saint Basil the Great (c. 330-379), Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, is one of the Three Holy Hierarchs and among the most important Fathers of the Orthodox Church. A profound theologian, he defended the divinity of Christ and the Holy Spirit against the Arians and gave the Church the Divine Liturgy that bears his name, celebrated on the great feasts.

He was also a father of monasticism and a tireless servant of the poor, founding the "Basiliad," a vast complex of hospitals and shelters for the sick and needy. In the Greek tradition he is honoured on 1 January, when he is remembered as the bringer of blessings and gifts for the New Year. As a devotional icon, Saint Basil is a model of wisdom, charity and faith — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift for those who bear his name.
