The Significance of Saint Catherine
Saint Catherine (c. 287-305) was a young noblewoman of Alexandria, renowned for her beauty and her brilliant learning in philosophy, rhetoric and the sciences. Refusing to renounce her faith in Christ, she boldly confronted the emperor and, in debate, confounded and converted fifty of the foremost pagan philosophers sent to silence her.
For her confession she was condemned to die upon a spiked wheel, which shattered at her touch, and she was at last beheaded. According to tradition her relics were carried by angels to Mount Sinai, where the great Monastery of Saint Catherine bears her name to this day. Patroness of students, scholars and philosophers, she is celebrated on 25 November. As a devotional icon, Saint Catherine is a sign of wisdom, courage and faith — a treasured presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift, especially for students and those who bear her name.
