The Significance of Saint Christopher

Saint Christopher (Christopher of Lycia) was a Great Martyr of the third century who gave his life for confessing Christ. His name means "Christ-bearer" (Christophoros), and according to a well-loved tradition he once carried the Christ-child across a dangerous river, feeling the weight of the whole world upon his shoulders.

For this reason he has become, in both East and West, the beloved patron and protector of travellers, drivers and all who journey. In some Byzantine icons he is shown in an unusual way, with the head of a dog, reflecting an ancient legend of his origins, while elsewhere he appears as a soldier-martyr. He is celebrated on 9 May. As a devotional icon, Saint Christopher is a sign of protection on every journey and a meaningful gift for travellers and those who bear his name.
