This icon of Saint Demetrios the Myrrh-streamer is a vintage-style serigraphy on canvas with rich gold-leaf detailing and an aged patina that echoes a centuries-old original. It shows the Great Martyr mounted on his red horse, spearing his persecutor, surrounded by a border of scenes from his life and martyrdom — a complete "vita" icon of the patron of Thessaloniki.

The Significance of Saint Demetrios

This is a "vita" icon — an icon of the saint's life — in which Saint Demetrios is shown at the centre as the warrior-saint mounted on his red horse, encircled by smaller scenes depicting the events of his life, his confession of faith, his martyrdom and his miracles. It is the companion image to the icon of Saint George, the two great warrior-martyrs of the Orthodox Church often depicted together.

Saint Demetrios of Thessaloniki, the Great Martyr, was a young Roman officer who confessed Christ during the persecutions of the early 4th century and was speared to death around the year 306. From his relics flowed fragrant myrrh, and he is honoured as the "Myrrh-streamer" (Myrovlitis) and the beloved patron of Thessaloniki, celebrated on 26 October. As a devotional icon he is a sign of courage, protection and faithful witness — a powerful presence in any prayer corner and a meaningful gift, especially for those who bear his name.

Handmade in Greece since 1978.

Every piece leaves our workshop finished by hand — the wood prepared, the image laid, the surface aged and varnished. One at a time, the way Greek icon workshops have worked for generations.

We make them to be lived with: held in prayer, hung in a quiet corner, passed on.

"Come close to God, and God will come close to you." — James 4:8
