Byzantine Silver Orthodox icon of Saint Demetrius

Saint Demetrios was born in Thesaloniki, Greece in 270 AD. He came from a wealthy family and because he was athletic in appearance and heroic in spirit, he became a high-ranking officer in the Roman Army at a very young age. (This is why he is depicted in Byzantine icons in military dress, either standing or riding a horse.) He considered himself a soldier of Christ first, and a military soldier second. He spent most of his time as a devout missionary, preaching the Gospel at secret meetings and converting pagans to the Christian faith.

Saint Demetrius, also known as Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki, is commemorated on October 26th in the Eastern Orthodox Church. This day is dedicated to honoring and remembering the life and martyrdom of Saint Demetrius. He is venerated as a patron saint of Thessaloniki in Greece and is highly regarded as a military saint and a defender of the faith. Saint Demetrius is celebrated for his courage, faithfulness, and his willingness to sacrifice his life for his beliefs. His feast day is marked with religious services, processions, and various festivities in Thessaloniki and other areas where his veneration is strong.
