Saint Demetrios, born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 270 AD, came from a wealthy family. His athletic build and courageous spirit led him to become a high-ranking Roman Army officer at a young age. However, he viewed himself as a soldier of Christ above all, dedicating his life to missionary work, preaching the Gospel, and converting pagans to Christianity. This is why he is often depicted in Byzantine icons wearing military attire, either standing or on horseback.
